Many of my paintings are inspired by the very special landsacape around St Ives Bay. I am fortunate enough to live very close to the sea, and usually start the day by going out walking along the edge of the Bay. The sense of space and light on that particular day, or something I have glimpsed while I’m out walking often act as a starting point for a painting once I am in my studio. Even though the finished work may be quite abstract, it will have its origins in something I have seen.
The choice of materials is a really important part of my painting process too. I’m always searching for the right texture and feel – the surface of a linen canvas, a particular consistency of paint. I find it particularly exciting when a combination of different materials opens up unexpected creative possibilities.
